As students across Houston head back to school, our streets become busier with children walking and biking, parents navigating school drop-offs, and buses and vehicles sharing increasingly active roadways. August also marks National Traffic Awareness Month, making this an important time to consider how the design of our streets can help keep everyone safe.
Safe streetscapes are about more than moving cars efficiently. Thoughtful design can create environments where people of all ages and abilities feel comfortable walking, biking, waiting for transit, or crossing the street. Elements such as well-designed sidewalks, safe crossings, shade, lighting, landscaping, and clearly defined spaces for different modes of transportation all contribute to streets that are safer and more welcoming.
Scenic Houston’s Streetscape Resource Guide 3.0 offers practical strategies for creating streets that balance mobility, safety, accessibility, and community character. Here are three ways to put those principles into practice:
1. Make walking safer.Continuous sidewalks, accessible curb ramps, shorter crossing distances, and clearly marked crosswalks can make it easier and safer for students and families to walk.
2. Slow traffic where people gather.School zones, neighborhood streets, and busy intersections benefit from designs that encourage slower vehicle speeds and give pedestrians greater visibility and priority.
3. Design for comfort, not just movement.Shade trees, landscaping, lighting, benches, and well-maintained sidewalks can make walking and biking more comfortable—encouraging people to choose active transportation while creating more inviting public spaces.
This back-to-school season is an opportunity to think beyond the school zone and consider how everyday street design influences safety for everyone. A child walking to school, a parent pushing a stroller, a senior crossing the street, and a driver navigating an intersection all benefit from streets designed with people in mind. By prioritizing safe, attractive, and accessible streetscapes, Houston can create neighborhoods where getting from one place to another is not only more convenient, but safer and more enjoyable.
This school year let’s make safe streets part of the lesson and part of the landscape.
