Steve Alvis: Building Places That Bring Communities Together
What makes a place memorable? Often, it is the care taken long before anyone arrives: the decision to preserve a tree, create a place to gather, or plan for what a growing community will need years from now. These choices shape how a place looks and how people experience it.
That is why Scenic Houston is proud to honor Steve Alvis as our 2026 Scenic Visionary.
Steve is the co-founder and managing partner of NewQuest Properties. He began his real estate career in 1985 and went on to build a company whose developments serve communities across Texas and Louisiana. From neighborhood shopping centers to larger destinations, his work has helped bring businesses and services closer to the people who use them every day.
Steve’s leadership also extends to public service. In 2023, Governor Greg Abbott appointed him to the Texas Transportation Commission, which oversees the Texas Department of Transportation. He previously served as chair of the Texas Facilities Commission. These roles reflect the breadth of his experience in shaping the places and infrastructure that communities depend on.
Steve is also a principal owner and developer of Houston Oaks. Its landscape and gathering spaces offer another example of the lasting value of a thoughtfully planned place.
Each year, Scenic Houston presents the Scenic Visionary award to a leader who has played a vital role in improving Houston’s appearance, image, and quality of life. Steve’s career reminds us that development leaves a lasting impression. The choices made today become the places future generations will know.
